【植物学的な「ベリー」の条件】
Here’s what makes something a “berry” in botany:
そもそも「ベリー」って何なの？
So like, what even is a “berry”?
え、見た目でしょ？
I mean, it’s about how it looks, right?
ちっちゃくて、赤くて、甘酸っぱくて、ジャムにされて、ヨーグルトに乗ってて、ケーキの上で輝いてる…
Tiny, red, sweet and sour, made into jam, sits on yogurt, and shines on top of cakes…
それが「ベリー」だろ！？
That’s what a berry is, right!?
……と、思ってたブライアン、爆死。
Well, that’s what I thought… and I was dead wrong.
実はね、植物学的に言うと、
But actually, from a botanical point of view,
「ベリー」の定義はめっちゃくちゃ厳しいの！！！
The definition of a berry is super strict!!!
一つの子房からできている。複数じゃダメ。
It has to come from a single ovary. No extras allowed.
果肉の中に種がある。外じゃダメ。
The seeds must be inside the flesh, not on the outside.
外皮・果肉・種がひとまとまり。三位一体！
Skin, flesh, and seeds are all one unit. A holy trinity!
もうね、アイドルのオーディションくらい審査が厳しい！！
It’s like trying out for a pop idol group—tough standards!!
じゃあイチゴはなぜ落選したのか？
So why did the strawberry fail the test?
イチゴって赤くてカワイイ実がぷっくりふくらんでるよね？
Strawberries are those cute, plump red fruits, right?
でもあの赤いとこ、実じゃないの！！
But that red part? Not even the actual fruit!!
なんと、「花托（かたく）」っていう、花の根元が大きくなった部分なの！！
It’s called a “receptacle”—the base of the flower that swells up!!
ちょ、待って！お前、実じゃなかったの！？

しかも、あの赤い実の表面にあるツブツブ！あれが「本物の実」だって！！
And those tiny dots on the surface? Those are the actual fruits!!!
